Configuring Network Management System

Imagine you are the Network Administrator of a large network that has many switches and routers, servers and hundreds of computers.

Then definitely you need to monitor all above devices. It’s possible with Network Management System (NMS) that uses Simple Network Management Protocol.

The advantage of having isNetwork Management System is whenever something happens like an interface goes down, then you will receive an e-mail or text message regarding that and you can attend it immediately to rectify the issue.

So Simple idea is Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) enables network administrators to monitor and manage network nodes.

The SNMP system consists of three components:

SNMP manager collects information from an SNMP agent using the “get” action.

Changes configurations on an agent using the “set” action.

SNMP agents

Management Information Base (MIB) stores data and operational statistics about the managed device.

The SNMP manager is the software that is running on any pc or server that use to monitor the network devices, the SNMP agent runs on the network device like inside routers, switches, servers etc.

How to Configure Network Management System

For this demonstration I use PRTG Network Monitor. https://www.paessler.com/prtg

PRTG is a SNMP based network monitoring platform which can monitor Cisco, Linux, Windows and many other devices.

It’s easy to install and you can learn how to monitor your network with SNMP.

Here you can find the Video demonstration for the Network Management System configuration for Cisco device,
